Bangkok Business Travelers
If you plan to do business in Bangkok, these tips may come in helpful.
Firstly, Bangkok can be a highly attractive place to do business beaucse it’s a major transport hub. So it’s easy to get to other Asian business centers from here. And of course, the vibrant entertainment options mean that it won’t be a case of ‘all work and no play’ for Jack.
However, doing business here may prove trying. Sources say "they are keen to learn Western ideas and technology, but may not believe that these same ideas will work in Thailand". A common reply they’ll give you is “This is Thailand.”
Time and Working Hours:
- Same as in most other countries.
- Also common for companies to work half-day on Saturdays
- Generally, business meetings will not be on Saturdays.
- Thais are less concerned with punctuality than most Westerners
Dress
Shirt and tie for men in general, and a jacket for meetings with higher management. Pants, shirt or skirt for women are ok.
Class and Respect
Thais are generally still quite class conscious, so how you dress will affect their reaction or response to you.
One backlash: if you are treated with much respect, you may not be given full information or told things that disagree with you, as many white-skinned bosses have found out.
Negotiations
Can be challenging again because of the lack of English skills. Even if a company has someone who speaks English, the person may not know the contact you are trying to reach, or they may be empowered to make decisions.
Once a contact, negotiations can be slowed down as most companies need to have a consensus before actions can be taken.
Payment:
Payment can be another lengthy process. If you are exporting to Thailanand expect a Thai company to transfer payment overseas to you, it is strongly advised that you insist on a letter of credit so that you can be paid promptly.
