Joy's Travel Notes on Chatuchak Weekend Market
This is a must-go, must-visit in Bangkok. 35 acres of stalls selling everything from bamboo mats to lamps to local crafts to clothes … and the list goes on. But remember, this is a weekend-only market. Though recently, they have added some air-condtioned section, most of it is still open-air. So go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat, bring an umbrella and a bottle of water. And to help visitors get around, free maps are available near the parking lot.
The wonderful thing about Chatuchak (or ‘JJ’ as the locals call it) is that prices here are generally lower than in other Bangkok markets and guidebooks say the “quality is substantially better”. Well …best way to find out is to head down here myself.
Getting Around:
It seems like there’s a certain ‘order in the midst of chaos’ in one of the world’s largest market.
The outer rim of the market features plants, gardening equipment and some clothing. The inner rim carries more clothes, souvenirs and household décor. Towards the back, you’ll find exotic plants, animals and fish.
Near the Khampeng Phet MRT station are clothing, artwork and antique stalls. This is where you find items designed by Her Royal Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Buy something here and part of the money will fund rural development projects.
Getting there
You can get here by stopping at the Mo Chit Sjytrain Station, or the Chatuchak or Phamphaeng Phet subway stops.
