Durians in Bangkok
Thai durians are one of my favourite and I recommend that you try this 'King of Fruits' when in Bangkok.
Thai durians are noted for their “subtle flavour and smooth texture” and generally tend to be have creamier, sweeter with a more golden yellow flesh. Thais prefer a their durians or 'Turians", to be just ripe. The flesh should be slightly soft to the touch without being crunchy. All I know is ...if I'm ever in Bangkok, I'm getting my hands on one of these!
Varieties of Thai Durians
First-time tasters of Durians should go for the Mon Tong or the Golden Pillow Durian. It has a light creamy texture and (get this) is the mildest of durians. Other popular varieties include the cha ni and the kan yao.
Where to buy?
You can generally find street fruit vendors selling them. Or Robinson's department store.
Nutritional value
In case you are still not convinced, durian contains high vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus.
Durian By-products:
Ok ok, if you are really not going to try the real thing, at least have a go at cakes or desserts made with durian. In Bangkok, you can try the Durian ice-cream, or Khao Nieow Turian - Sticky Rice topped with durian meat cooked in a coconut cream sauce, and Turian Kuan, preserved durian toffee, or jams.
