Joy's Bangkok Travel Notes

Bangkok is one of the most popular holiday destination among my friends, and definitely one of my "to-visit" places. And why not? It's near (to SIngapore), it's cheap (with all those great Bangkok deals). But best of all, it's where you shop for bags, clothes and shoes at steal prices. And after that, indulge in a Thai massage, before you tuck into some spicy Thai food.

Bangkok Floating Market

Another icon of Thailand, often seen in brochures.  If you plan to visit this famous tourist spots these info will come in handy.

Quick Facts About Bangkok Floating Market

The original canals were built in 1886 on demand of His Majesty the King of Thailand to help ease communication in Ratchaburi.  The Floating Market then started in 1967.

Visiting Bangkok Floating Market

First, you need to ascertain that you are in fact visiting the original Floating Market at Damnoen Saduak, at the Ratchburi province. T his is because this place has become so popular and many floating markets have spawned around Bangkok

It’s about 110 km from Bangkok.  Depending on traffic conditions, it’s about one and half or even more than 2 hours to get there.

Best to go on weekends to avoid the traffic.

It’s recommended to go with an organized tour.  Most of them will pick you up from the hotel at about 6:30 am (slightly later on weekends, as there’re less traffic).  Remember to clarify that it is the Damnoen Saduak market you are going to.

Another tip is to check what the tour price includes and how many people are going on the tour.

What you’ll see at Bangkok Floating Market:

  • Boats selling food like fruit, BBQ chicken, Som Tam
  • Boats going from one house to another selling wares.
  • Note though, because Thailand does have big supermarkets and ‘wet markets’, you may be disappointed if you hope to see locals coming here to buy their daily needs.  You will mainly see tourist like you and me here.

Where to visit after Bangkok Floating Market:

Most tours may have side trips and visit the Sugar House, the Teakwood Handicraft Center and the Rose Garden.
