Joy's Bangkok Travel Notes

Bangkok is one of the most popular holiday destination among my friends, and definitely one of my "to-visit" places. And why not? It's near (to SIngapore), it's cheap (with all those great Bangkok deals). But best of all, it's where you shop for bags, clothes and shoes at steal prices. And after that, indulge in a Thai massage, before you tuck into some spicy Thai food.

Renting a car in Bangkok

Seems like renting a car in Bangkok is quite a pretty straightforward procedure.  But firstly, do you think you will really need to rent a car in Bangkok? Like many other major Asian cities, driving in Bangkok can be a bit ‘scary’. (Think the closest experience I had of it was being on a motorbike in an Indian city …)

Here, the road signs may be in Thai and English, but I read that just the “overwhelming” number of motorbikes on the road can “put many people off driving.”

Public Transport

There are many other good forms of public transport in Bangkok, like the Skytrain, the underground and the tuk tuk.

Car only if …

A car is recommended if you like to play golf and may want to explore other areas around Bangkok like Lopburi, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Suphanburi.  Then a drive down would be quite pleasant.

If you still want to rent a car …

  • There are many international and local car rental companies to choose from.
  • You can flip through the Bangkok Post classified for a listing of car rental companies
  • You can choose to self-drive or have it chauffeur driven.
  • You can choose to pick up the car at the airport or downtown area.
  • You will need your passport, a driving license that is at least one year old and a credit card.
  • Make sure you check what insurance is covered in the rental. And your liability should there be an accident.
  • It’s better to choose the ‘unlimited mileage’ deal, rather than the pay-per-mile deal.
  • If it’s your first time in Bangkok, I recommend a chauffer-driven one.
