Thai Boxing in Bangkok
Also called Muay Thai. I’ve always been intrigued by this sport. Such strength, yet grace and agility. Man! This sport is so much part of the Thai culture that I would simply have to visit one Thai Boxing event if I ever drop by Bangkok.
Muay Thai begain as an early form of armed combat, was then banned in 1920 because of it’s physical repercussions, then revived again in 1937 with new rules to protect the boxers.
Spiritual Element to Muay Thai
I never knew this but it seems Muay Thai also has a spiritual side to it. Before each match, the fighters kneel in a prayer to their teacher, a rite know as wai kru. Then they dance to invoke the power of the ‘spirits’, a process called ram muay.
The ceremony is accompanied by music that sounds like bagpipes, finger cymbals and drum, called phihat music. Fighters may also wear bands around their arms, containgin amulets for protection.
Physical Element to Muay Thai
Ok, my interest is more in the sporting aspect of this activity.
The fight begins! Points are awarded for each blow a fighter manages to land on his opponent. Only the groin is 'out of bounds'. Just like Rambo in the movie, in between games, fighters get a rub-down from their coaches and word of advice.
