Beijing is now hot in the news with the upcoming Olympic games. But beyond the glitzy and the modern, this city ancient city has much to offer ...like staying in a Hutong (a communal living concept).
Beijing is a modern city with high rise buildings and shopping malls. Although hotels and restaurants here cannot compete with those in Shanghai, they have improved a lot. And of course more so with the mega-event of the year; the 2008 Olympics. But it's also a city with many old buildings ... so catch them before they give way to modernization ...
Beijing literally means “Northern Capital”.
If you love mountain scenes, you’ll be happy to know that the Yanshan Mountain range forms a stunning natural backdrop in the northeast, with the Taihang Moutain range is in the west. In the northwest, is the Mongolian plateau. Lovely! :)
There are a large number of old buildings here.
This city is most convenient starting point for visiting The Great Wall.
The city is designed in a very orderly manner (long straight boulevards, network of roads)
Total area: About 750 square km.
Annual rainfall: 630 millimeters
Population: more than 13.8 million (9 million are temporary residents)
You can find ethnic groups from Korea, Manchuria and Mongolia in China.
