Hong Kong

Lay hoe ma?
My last visit to Hong Kong was about 20 years back, and my memories of it are eating at the Chinese Floating Restaurant and visiting the Ocean Park. While those still remain as Hong Kong highlights, I'm sure this vibrant city has evolved over the last two decades, with even more night spots, 5-star hotels and shopping centers flourishing everywhere.

Joy's Travel Notes on Business Travelers in Hong Kong

If you’re a business visitor in Hong Kong, here are some tips to make your life easier.

Working Hours: 9am to 6pm.  Some offices are opened 9am to 12 noon on Saturdays.  But work culture is such that overtime is very common. ... :(  Lunch hour is officially 1pm to 2pm , but an elaborate business meal can go on for hours.

Business Cards:  You must carry your card with you.  Always give and receive cards with both hands. This can be done after the initial handshake.  If you’ll be doing business in Hong Kong regularly, you may want have it printed in English on one side and Cantonese on the other.

Face:  This is quite a big thing among the Chinese.  Be careful not to make the other party feel embarrassed or simply look ‘bad’.  Look out for non-verbal signs

Be punctual.

Best to make appointments before turning up.

As business decisions are not made quickly … BE PATIENT.

Colours are important. Red is considered a lucky colour.  You can wear a red tie.

At the end of a trip, you can have a dinner with your host as a show of respect.
