Tips when dining at a restaurant
Here are some dining tips to help you along when you do your restaurant-hopping in Hong Kong :)
What to wear: Generally, casual is fine for restaurants in Hong Kong. If it’s a formal lunch or dinner, put on the jacket and tie.
Reservations: Because the food is so good, best to call up and reserve a table. Call 108-1 to check the phone number of the restaurant.
Service Charge: Most restaurant charge a 10% service fee on top of the bill. May be higher during Chinese New Year.
Paying for what you didn’t order: When you sit down in a Hong Kong restaurant, you’ll notice that they’ll serve you some Chinese tea, bring some peanut snacks and pickles. All these will go to the bill, including the ‘wet wipes’ they provide.
Non-smoking: Legally, indoor restaurants are to have a non-smoking policy, unless they applied for an exemption (until 30 June 2009).
Credit Cards: Most will accept cards. Check the slip before signing. And get a receipt.
Disputes: If you've got any disputes with the receipts, keep your receipts and call the Consumer Council Hotline 852 2929 2222.
