Hong Kong

Lay hoe ma?
My last visit to Hong Kong was about 20 years back, and my memories of it are eating at the Chinese Floating Restaurant and visiting the Ocean Park. While those still remain as Hong Kong highlights, I'm sure this vibrant city has evolved over the last two decades, with even more night spots, 5-star hotels and shopping centers flourishing everywhere.

Dos and Don’ts in Hong Kong

  • Don’t expect taxi drivers to speak English. Do carry a map or better yet, a written Cantonese instruction.
  • Do learn to eat with chopsticks. It's an advantage if you're unable to get a fork and spoon.
  •  Do be open to a new culture. The Hong Kongers eat anything from ox tendons to duck tongues to smelly bean curd.
  • Do wait for your seat to be allocated when you are at a party.
  • Do leave some food on your plate and wipe your hands with the towel after your meal.
  • Do keep your valuables in the hotel room safe.
  • Do not hold your chopstick upright or place them upright in your bowl of rice.
  • Do take a gift when invited to a party. It can be a food item or a souvenir.
  • Do not take photos of the airport and certain religious and government buildings.
  • Although Hong Kong is pretty much a cosmopolitan city, it’s best to err on the side of caution and dress conservatively.
