Notes: $100, $50, $20, $10 and $5
Coins: $2, $1, 50¢, 20¢, 10¢ and 5¢.
Each denomination of notes is a different colour.
Coin sizes are not proportional to their value.
Currency exchange
- 'Money changers' throughout Perth and the metropolitan area, as well as inside Perth International Airport.
- Most banks in the city will also change currencies, and accept traveller’s cheques. Some hotels and resorts also offer this service.
- For better rates, change your money at the bank or the money changer.
Banks
Opening hours:
9:30am to 4pm, Mon to Thurs, and until 5pm on Fri. Some open on Saturday mornings.
Five largest bank in Western Australia:
ANZ, BankWest, Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, and National Australia Bank. Headquarters usually in the city center.
Other banks:
Bank of Melbournk, Citibank, Bank of New Zealand, Chase Manhattan, Banque Nationale de Paris
Most of the banks have the EFTPOS system, but pay charge a fee for withdrawing cash, or a minimum withdrawal amount may be needed.
ATMs
- Most will accept cards from different banks.
- Machines operate 24/7.
- Besides banks, ATMs can also be found large shopping centers.
- Most connect to the Maestro or Cirrus networks.
Taking money in and out
Any currency with a value of $5000 AUD must be reported to the Customs. There is no limit to the amount you can bring in and out, but you have to declare it.
