Museums in Phnom Penh
If you’re interested in the city’s culture and history, why not visit some of its museums?
Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21)
Where: Corner of St 113 and St 350
Cost: $2
Opening hours: Daily from 8am to 5pm except lunchtime
This was where inmates were interrogated, tortured, imprisoned or executed when the Khmer Rouge came into power. Much of it have been left in the state it was when the Khmer Rouge abandoned it in 1979. Today, it’s a museum which serves as a memorial to those who have suffered. You’ll see thousands of photos of the victims on display. There are also paintings of torture by a survivor of Toul Sleng.
National Museum
Where: St 178 and St 13, next to the Royal Palace
Cost: $3
Opening Hours: 8am to 5pm daily
What you’ll see first is its distinctive rust-red building. Inside are over 5000 objects of statues, lingas and Angkorian artifacts, and the legendary ‘Leper King’ statue. There is also a good selection of post-Angkorian Buddha figures.
