Joy's Travel Notes on The Royal Palace

This is a must-see in Phnom Penh. The Palace Grounds, and the two pagodas – Silver Pagoda and the Emerald Buddha – is open to the public. Using French technology and Cambodian designs, they were built in the 19th century, but remains largely intact from modernization.

Quick Facts:

Built more than 100 years ago for the residence of the King of Cambodia and his family
Was a venue for court ceremonies and rituals
Today, it is home to Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni and former King Norodm Sihanouk
It consists of several buildings, structures and gardens within a 500 x 800 meter area
A distinctive feature is the high sculpted wall and the golden spired Chanchhaya Pavilion within the palace grounds; the street sounds cannot be heard because of the high palace grounds! Wow.

When to visit: Anytime except 11:00am to 2:00pm (this is the time when the locals take their afternoon siesta). Best to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat.

Cost: US$6.25 or 25000 riel. No extra fee for camera.

(Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to take pictures inside the Silver Pagoda and some of the Palace buildings.)

Attire: No shorts or bare-shoulders. But you can rent sarongs and T-shirts for 1000 riel (plus a US$1 deposit) at the entrance.

Guide pamphlets and tour guides are available near the entrance.
